Host Headers in IIS 6.0 not working from the outside

I had a website on my IIS 6.0 server running fine as a default website such ashttp://exmple.com  My domain name was forwarded to the external IP of my router which through port forwarding forwarded it to the external IP of my webserver.  From there the default website loaded just fine.    If I wanted to run any other sites I had to create sites under default websites so the others would behttp://example.com/othersites  I have recently moved my site out of the default website creating a new one just for that site, and the other sites are new separate sites as well.

I have setup DNS so that at least internally I can go to http://default.com and though it is not a default site anymore IIS still routes to the correct website.  I setup my host header in this format "default.com"  now if I type the URL into the browser on my webserver I am brought to the correct site.  The problem is from the outside if I try to go to http://default.com it's still trying to route to my default website and I get 404 errors with access denied because the default document is not found.  If I create one default document for default website that document opens fine if I enter the URL into a web browser from the outside.

So my host headers are working internally but not for external access.  Have I missed something?  Are Host headers being stripped somehow?  any help would be appreciated.
